The running game where every gate is a sum

Math Max is a free maths game for children aged 6 to 12. Max runs, jumps and dodges through five worlds, and every few seconds a sum appears: run through the gate with the right answer.

The forest world as a lifelike picture: tall pines, autumn trees, mountains and warm sunlight, with Max running down the path.
Actual gameplay: Max in a red cap and yellow hoodie runs down a forest road in bright, blocky 3D, under a wooden sign with a sum.

Try a gate

This is one moment from a run. The wrong answers aren’t random: each one is a mistake children really make, like counting one too far or forgetting to carry.

7 + 5 = ?

How a run works

Max never stops running, so the maths happens at game speed. Three things, over and over:

  1. Max runs down the middle lane of a suburban street, with the score, coins and hearts at the top.

    Run and dodge

Swipe or use the arrow keys to change lanes and jump over logs. Collect coins and build a combo.

  2. A wooden sign with a sum hangs above the forest path while Max runs.

    Read the sum

A sum appears on a wooden sign. The road clears before the gates, so there is time to think.

  3. An “Almost!” sign with the sum and its right answer and a Go button, while Max picks himself up.

    Run through the right gate

The right gate bursts open with a trail of stars. A wrong one costs a heart and shows the answer, and that sum comes back later.

One run, five worlds

After every eight sums Max runs straight into the next world, and each one brings trickier obstacles.

  1. Forest

Every run starts on a sandy path between wooden fences. Jump the fallen logs and steer round the giant mushrooms.

  2. Suburban

Front gardens and quiet streets, with road barriers, dumpsters and parked delivery vans in the way.

  3. Stadium

Hurdles on a red running track. The crowd does the wave and jumps up after every right answer.

  4. City

Shops, flats and skyscrapers, zebra crossings and traffic lights. The obstacles come faster here.

  5. Space

A rainbow road among the planets, with laser fences and asteroids. Space never ends: how far can you go?

The Forest world: a sandy path with fences, trees and a lake. The Suburban world: a street with houses, gardens and a pavement. The Stadium world: a red running track between full stands and a scoreboard. The City world: a three-lane street between shops and flats with a skyline behind. The Space world: a rainbow road floating between planets and stars.

Maths that grows with your child

Everyone starts with a short warm-up: two quick right answers in a row move up a level, so a child who knows their tables gets there in about three minutes. After that Math Max moves up when sums go well, steps back when they don’t, and brings back the sums that went wrong.
